Article #9 10-day Malaysian food festival in New Delhi

Published: Friday October 5, 201

NEW DELHI: A Malaysian food festival supported by Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airlines opened Thursday night in this Indian capital city.

Dubbed Rasa Ria Malaysia, the 10-day festival is being held at the Le Meridien.

Speaking at the launch, Malaysian High Commissioner to India Datuk Tan Seng Sung said multi-racial Malaysia was blessed with the rich cuisines of the many ethnic groups in the country.

"We are also blessed with a fusion of dishes that are not found in the original homeland (of some of the ethnic groups)," he said.

This was especially true in the case of the straits-born Chinese Baba Nyonya food, which is a blend of Malay, Indian and Chinese cooking unique to the Malay Archipelago, he added.

"This is made possible because of the numerous mixed marriages between the three main races of the straits settlements of Malacca and Penang which have contributed towards making the two cities Unesco world heritage sites," he said.

Besides, there are also rich varieties of food from Sabah and Sarawak.

"Lest we forget, the Portuguese, Dutch and English have also landed on our shores. They, too, have contributed to the Malaysian food heritage," said Tan, adding that in the northern states, Malaysians had the benefit of enjoying the dishes of the Thais who had settled down in the country.

"This is what makes Malaysian cuisine unique and pertinent to the country's tourism punchline, 'Malaysia, Truly Asia'," he added. - Bernama

Article #7 Despatch rider jailed 50 years for raping teenager

Published: Wednesday October 10, 2012

PETALING JAYA: A despatch rider who impersonated a policeman when he raped a 15-year-old girl was jailed 50 years and given 18 strokes of the cane.

Mohd Nazrin Mustafa, 21, was found guilty on two counts of raping the teenager in some bushes near Kampung Sungai Bakau, Gombak on April 3 last year.

Ampang Sessions judge Roszianawati Ahmad said Mohd Nazrin was "cruel, having stopped the victim while pretending to be a policeman and took her to a secluded area then raped her repeatedly."

"You called your friends to come and watch the rape and coerced the victim into stripping.

"She begged you not to hurt her, a mere teen at your mercy, and you still raped her twice," said judge Roszianawati.

The judge said she believed the victim's testimony, adding the that the chemical analysis and rape test proved the victim's claims.

"You (Mohd Nazrin) claimed that upon seeing the victim naked, you masturbated on her, but that doesn't explain why your semen was found inside the victim," said Roszianawati.

"Given all these factors, I find you guilty of both charges," she said.

The judge ruled that a deterrent sentence was necessary to reflect the hatred towards such crime. She also denied the defence's request for a good behaviour bond.

She sentenced Mohd Nazrin to 25 years and eight strokes for the first charge and 25 years and 10 strokes for the second.

The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning Mohd Nazrin would serve 25 years jail.

Counsel Mohd Yusoff Ag Lah's request for a stay of sentencing, pending an appeal was denied by the court citing lack of special circumstances.

Mohd Yusoff told the court that it was his client's first offence and was a sole breadwinner with two children.

DPP Noor Fadzlin Abd Zawawi objected to the request for a bond, saying that while Mohd Nazrin was only 20 years-old when the offence was committed, he should be more responsible as he had a family.

She said the victim gave an impact statement from behind a screen (as she is a minor), telling the court how the incident deeply traumatized her.

"I've halted my studies, being to embarrassed to go to school. All my dreams are ruined," she said.

The judge repeatedly asked if the girl, who was sobbing uncontrollably, if she was able to continue.

Her family, who attended the proceedings, was also seen on the verge of tears.

What about now? ✎

So, what is Journalism about? For me, it can be explained as a form of reporting of news in a society. The people who write journalism is known as "journalists" as what we called as "reporters". What are the role of these people? They provide us current information such as news, events and so on. These are what I know about Journalism.

COM1106- Introduction to Journalism - When I first came into contact with journalism, I found out that it's actually a difficult task especially for new learners like us. Before this, I thought that journalism was just about writing, reading, reporting. However, now I know that being a good journalist is not as easy as we could imagine. As what our lecturer, Mr. K said, a good journalist must have important characteristics such as good writing skills, curiosity, excellent imagination and many many more.. Honestly, I have no such qualities of being a journalist. I've always dealt with different types of problems when writing especially my poor language/grammatical skills. I am a poor kid with no self-confident at all! :(

Therefore, I must try my level best to learn more about journalism. Even though I don't really like reading, but this is the only effective way to improve my language isn't it? I don't hope for the best. I only wish I could really score a good grade in this subject. If you think you can, you can ???

However, my biggest dream is to become a news reporter. Beliefs have made me keep holding on with my dreams. What I believe was, even if there's a lot of ups and downs in life, but as long as we don't give up with the passion in ourselves, there's nothing impossible
